The Framework

What is PICRAT?

PICRAT is a peer-reviewed framework that gives schools a simple, shared language for understanding technology use in the classroom.

It asks two questions:

What are students doing? Are they Passive (receiving), Interactive (responding), or Creative (making)?

What is technology doing to learning? Is it helping to Replace existing practice, Amplify it, or Transform it?

Together, these two dimensions form a 3×3 grid with nine possible uses of technology. The goal is to make intentional choices about when and how technology adds value.

A worked example

One lesson, placed honestly.

A History lesson for 13 and 14 year olds. The class explores a teacher-made Padlet timeline of ancient Egypt and answers questions about what they find. Here is the whole method, exactly as you would walk it through in a staff meeting.

What are students doing?Navigating, reading and answering. That is responding to content, so the row is Interactive.

What is technology doing?The Padlet holds the same material a printed timeline would. It swaps in for paper, so the column is Replace.

So what?Nothing is wrong with this lesson. But naming its cell reveals the lever: the teacher made the timeline, so the teacher did the historical thinking.

The simulation invites exploration but the follow-up worksheet asks students to record on lined paper. Worth thinking about whether the way students capture findings should match the way they discover them.

For teacher educators

For the people who
teach the teachers.

PICRAT began as a research paper for teacher educators. The Suite came later. If you lecture on initial teacher training, a Masters in educational technology or a doctoral module, your students can use both.

Nothing to set up

Trainees sign up themselves and use the Suite free. There is no licence to buy, no seat count to manage and nothing for your department to sign. Ask them to use a personal address rather than a university one, so the account still reaches them after they graduate.

Material to teach from

A plain explanation of the framework, side by side reads against SAMR, TPACK and LOTI, and a printable observation rubric your students can take into placement.

Honest about the source

The Suite applies a published framework rather than replacing it. Kimmons, Graham and West are named throughout, and the paper is linked from every page here that explains the model.

Two questions and nine cells. It fits inside a single seminar, and it gives your students something more precise than good and bad to say about a lesson.

Who's behind this

From the classroom to a global schools group.

PICRAT Suite is built and run by Andy Perryer, a global education leader for an international schools group. He discovered the PICRAT model two years ago and has been on a mission ever since: to spread the best technology integration model in existence, and to build the tools that help teachers use it well.

There is no venture funding and no growth team. The Suite improves for one reason: teachers use it, and say what would make it better.
